Learning Objectives

Explanation

After   the lesson the students should be able to

A Cognitive Definitions Define social media in different   user related context Social media   is generally used as an umbrella term to relate to media used for social   networking and communication. This objective will allow the user to   understand three main contexts (personal, business & social) of social   media. This is presented firstly to give background to the discussion. This   learning objective represents the knowledge taxonomy level in the cognitive   domain.
A Cognitive Evolution Explain the historical evolution   of social media This learning   objective will expose the learner to understand the historical evolution of   social media with web 1.0 to web 2.0 tools that have evolved over the years.   This will also emphasize how traditional media such as word of mouth has been   translated to a digital social media format over the years.  This learning objective represents the   comprehension taxonomy level in the cognitive domain.
A Cognitive Media Explain different social media   formats available for business use with a particular emphasis on social   networking. Social media   is categorized as social networking, social book marking, social content,   social blogging.  Students will be   exposed to this categorization with specific emphasis on social networking.   The reason for emphasizing the latter is due to the fact that this format   provides most business applications for small business use. This learning   objective represents the comprehension taxonomy level in the cognitive   domain.

A Cognitive Application tools Demonstrate the use of three   application tools used in a selected social networking software platform. The students will learn how to use a minimum of three application   tools in www.ning.com platform to promote   small business marketing efforts. Students will be ready to venture into this   after understanding the definitions, evolution and the media formats. The   reader may note that this objective emphasizes on one of the social media   formats (social networking). This learning objective represents the application   taxonomy level in the cognitive domain.
B Psychomotor New account or search an existing network Register with a new or an existing social networking   application The reason for sequencing this learning objective here is to give   students hands on experience with the selected application tool. In order to   do this, students will need to search an existing network or create a new   one. Having done this they can see the application tools discussed in the   network.
A Cognitive Business application examples Apply the use of social networking tools to a given   business scenario Having learnt the tools, here students will apply different tools to   a given business scenarios. This learning objective represents the application   taxonomy level in the cognitive domain. This is sequenced here in order to   support the next learning objective. This is to develop a template that could   be based on given business context. The business case study (video) will be   useful for them to do this.
B Psychomotor Template based application tool

Design a template based application tool Based on the case analysis done earlier, students will now be able   to develop an appropriate design template. (Please note that this does not involve   any coding. www.ning.com is a web related   template based social networking site which allows the user to build   templates in a matter of second by using a menu.)
B Psychomotor Sample content Add content to the template created. Students will be given sample data from the case to be added to the   templates. They will learn how to do this either through data entry or exporting   content from an external source.
B Psychomotor Add Friends Invite friends to the social   network This will be   assigned to be done outside the classroom since adding a number of friends   would be a time consuming affair. In class students will be taught to add   their own class friends.
B Psychomotor Social conversations Create social conversations to   support the business application tool created. Students will   be taught to create social conversations in getting their friends to ask   questions about the business application and also make comments on their own.   Students will be encouraged to continue this discussion after the class.

Index

  • Goal A – The learners will be introduced to popular social networking media that could be used to promote small business marketing efforts
  • Goal B – The learners will have an opportunity to use one of the tools in a stimulated environment to understand its functionality and applicability.

This sequencing is done in a manner to meet both goals set for this planned instruction. Students will also be evaluated based on this learning process in building a social network site.
